Zulfikar Harunani, fondly known as ‘ZUL,’ was the visionary behind Shehnai Restaurant, renowned for its award-winning dining experiences. With a passion for hospitality, Zul dedicated himself to creating memorable moments for patrons through unparalleled service and culinary excellence. His journey began at Kenya Utalii College before honing his skills in Glasgow, Scotland. Returning home, he gained invaluable experience at esteemed establishments like Mombasa Beach Hotel and Ngulia Safari Lodge
Zul’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Shehnai in 1984, a testament to his relentless pursuit of quality and service excellence. Beyond his role as a restaurateur, he contributed significantly to the hospitality and tourism industry, serving in leadership positions such as Chairman of Mombasa Coast Tourist Association and Trustee of Kenya Coast Tourist Association. He also chaired various boards and committees, demonstrating his commitment to community development.
A respected figure known for his integrity and leadership, Zul’s influence extended far beyond the restaurant industry. He played pivotal roles in cultural and educational initiatives within the Nasserpuria Memon Community and served as President of the Federation of Kenya Employers (Coast). Zul’s legacy lives on through Shehnai, a brand synonymous with his unwavering dedication and vision.

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Mehboob Harunani, the current Managing Director of Shehnai Restaurant and director at Kitchen Masters Ltd., began his journey in the family business in 1987. Starting as a training manager, Mehboob’s dedication led him to pursue further education in management development programs at Kenya Utalii College, where he excelled and earned promotions, eventually becoming the General Manager in 1996.
In 1997, Mehboob spearheaded the successful renovation and expansion project of Shehnai, cementing its reputation as a premier dining destination. Beyond his role as Managing Director, Mehboob is recognized for his contributions to the Tourism & Hospitality industry and his extensive social and voluntary work.
Throughout his career, Mehboob has held various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Rotaract Club of Bahari and President of Skal Kenya Coast and Skal Kenya National. He has also served on numerous committees and associations, such as Coast Amateur Swimming Association and Nasserpuria Memon Community.
In 2021, Mehboob received the prestigious ‘DIPLOME DU MERITE SKAL’ from the Skal International World President, becoming the first Kenyan to be honored with this award for promoting the ideals of the association and tourism at large.
A respected veteran in the industry, Mehboob continues to set high standards and inspire the younger generation to strive for excellence.
